Alloy 6 (UNS R30006)  is the most widely used cobalt-based alloy, offering an exceptional balance of wear resistance, corrosion protection, and high-temperature capability. With a nominal composition of 28% chromium, 5% tungsten, and 1.2% carbon, it maintains significant hardness up to 500°C (930°F) while providing excellent resistance to galling, abrasion, cavitation erosion, and thermal fatigue. This versatile alloy is the preferred choice for valve trim, pump components, and hardfacing applications .

 2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

Alloy 6 (UNS R30006)  offers versatility in application methods while maintaining consistent properties.

  • Hardfacing Methods: Ideally suited for PTA welding, laser cladding, thermal spraying, spray and fuse, and oxy-acetylene deposition .

  • Machining: Can be machined with carbide tooling; requires rigid setups, positive rake angles, and adequate coolant. Best finished by grinding .

  • Castability: Good fluidity for complex casting geometries; sound metallurgical structure .

  • Weldability: Excellent for overlay applications; minimal dilution issues with proper technique .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. Stellite 1: Lower hardness (45-50 vs. 50-58 HRC) but better toughness and impact resistance .

    • vs. Stellite 12: Similar properties; 6 offers better corrosion resistance; 12 has higher hardness .

    • vs. Stellite 21: 6 has higher wear resistance; 21 offers better impact and corrosion resistance .

3. Applications

  • Valve Components: Seats, gates, trim, stems, discs for oil & gas, power generation, chemical processing

  • Pump & Fluid Handling: Shafts, sleeves, bearings, impellers, wear rings

  • Aerospace & Automotive: Turbine blades, exhaust valves, engine components, wear pads

  • Industrial Tooling: Cutting edges, dies, extrusion screws, hot shear blades
