PH15-7Mo (AISI 632) is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum-aluminum precipitation-hardening stainless steel offering higher room and elevated temperature strength than 17-7 PH due to molybdenum substitution (2% Mo replaces 2% Cr). It can be formed in the soft austenitic condition and hardened to high strength levels (up to 240 ksi tensile) through low-temperature heat treatments with minimal distortion. This alloy is widely used for aircraft structural components, honeycomb panels, springs, and diaphragms requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonHeat Treatment Options: Condition A (Solution Treated): 1066°C (1950°F), rapid cool TH1050: Condition A + 566°C (1050°F) × 1.5h RH950: Condition A + refrigeration at -73°C (-100°F) × 8h + 510°C (950°F) × 1h Condition C: Hard cold rolling (50-60% reduction) CH900: Condition C + 482°C (900°F) × 1h
Forming: Excellent formability in Condition A; similar to 18-8 stainless steels . Welding: Good weldability using inert gas methods; post-weld heat treatment required to restore properties . Machining: Best machined in overaged condition; carbide tooling recommended . Material Comparison: vs. 17-7 PH: Higher strength due to molybdenum substitution; better elevated temperature properties . vs. 301 Stainless: Significantly higher strength after heat treatment; formable before hardening . vs. 15-5 PH: Semi-austenitic vs. martensitic; 15-7Mo optimized for sheet applications .
3. ApplicationsAircraft Components: Bulkheads, structural paneling, fuselage frames, welded honeycomb structures Springs: High-strength springs, retaining rings, constant-force springs Diaphragms: Pressure sensor diaphragms, regulators, instrument components Fasteners: High-strength fasteners requiring corrosion resistance Industrial: Components requiring high strength-to-weight ratio and moderate corrosion resistance
