Nitronic 60 is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel with significant silicon and manganese additions (Si 3.5-4.5%, Mn 7-9%) specifically formulated to provide exceptional resistance to galling, fretting, and wear—even in the annealed condition . It offers approximately twice the yield strength of 304 and 316 stainless steels, corrosion resistance between 304 and 316 with superior chloride pitting resistance, and oxidation resistance up to 980°C (1800°F) . The alloy remains fully non-magnetic even after severe cold work .

 2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Heat Treatment: Solution anneal at 1066°C (1950°F) followed by water quenching; cannot be hardened by heat treatment—strength increased only through cold working .

  • Hot Working: Heat to 1093-1117°C (2000-2045°F); avoid working below 816°C .

  • Cold Working: High work-hardening rate; can be cold rolled, drawn, and formed while maintaining fully austenitic structure .

  • Machining: More difficult than 304 (approximately 50% machinability rating); requires rigid setups, positive feeds, slow speeds, ample coolant, and sharp carbide tools .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using TIG, MIG, and SMAW methods; welded joints maintain galling resistance comparable to base metal .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. 304/316 Stainless: Twice the yield strength; significantly better galling and wear resistance; comparable corrosion with superior chloride pitting .

    • vs. Nitronic 30/40: Higher silicon (3.5-4.5%) provides superior galling resistance; selected specifically for metal-to-metal wear applications.

    • vs. 17-4 PH: Galling resistance in annealed condition without heat treatment; better high-temperature oxidation resistance .

    • vs. Cobalt Alloys (Stellite): Cost-effective alternative with similar galling resistance in applications below 980°C .
