Nitronic 40 is a nitrogen-strengthened high-manganese austenitic stainless steel offering approximately twice the room-temperature yield strength of Types 304, 321, and 347 . With nominal composition of 19-21.5% chromium, 5.5-7.5% nickel, 8-10% manganese, and 0.15-0.40% nitrogen, it combines high strength with good corrosion resistance and excellent toughness from cryogenic temperatures (-269°C) to elevated temperatures . The alloy remains non-magnetic even after severe cold work and offers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking in marine environments .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonHeat Treatment: Cannot be hardened by heat treatment; solution anneal at 1038-1121°C (1900-2050°F) followed by rapid quenching . In-process annealing may be performed between 1950-2050°F . Hot Working: Temperature range 927-1204°C (1700-2200°F); rapid cooling after working preserves properties . Cold Working: High work-hardening rate requires greater forming forces than 304L; intermediate annealing may be necessary for severe deformation . Can be cold rolled, drawn, and stamped. Machining: More difficult than most austenitic stainless steels due to work hardening; requires rigid tooling, heavy feeds, slow speeds, and ample cutting fluids . Carbide-coated tooling recommended . Welding: Readily welded using TIG, MIG, and SMAW methods; oxyacetylene welding not recommended due to carbon pickup risk . Post-weld annealing recommended to restore maximum corrosion resistance . Material Comparison: vs. 304 Stainless: Twice the yield strength; comparable corrosion resistance; remains non-magnetic after cold work; better cryogenic toughness . vs. 316 Stainless: Higher strength but lower molybdenum content; less resistant to pitting in severe chloride environments . vs. Nitronic 30: Higher nickel and chromium; better cryogenic properties; more aerospace-focused applications. vs. Nitronic 50: Lower corrosion resistance than Nitronic 50 (which surpasses 316); Nitronic 40 selected for high strength and cryogenic toughness .
3. ApplicationsAerospace: Aircraft engine components, hydraulic tubing, casings, housings, cryogenic tanks and lines for liquid-fueled rockets, compressor casings, exhaust systems Chemical Processing: Pressure vessels, reactors, process equipment Pollution Control: Equipment for emission control systems Cryogenic Service: Tanks, piping, valves, fittings for LNG, liquid nitrogen, and liquid helium Marine: Propeller shafts, components for marine environments Industrial: Expansion joints, bellows, ducting systems, clamps, flanges, fasteners Nuclear: Components requiring low magnetic permeability after fabrication
