Nitronic 30 is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel offering significantly higher annealed strength than conventional 304 while maintaining excellent aqueous corrosion resistance. With nominal composition of 16% chromium, 16% manganese, 2% nickel, and 0.2% nitrogen, this alloy provides good resistance to abrasive and metal-to-metal wear combined with superior mechanical properties. It is widely used for structural components, bulk solids handling equipment, and fasteners requiring a balance of strength, wear resistance, and corrosion protection .

2.Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Heat Treatment: Anneal at 1038-1121°C (1900-2050°F), rapid quench; cannot be hardened by heat treatment .

  • 3. Cold Working: Hardened only through cold working; work-hardening rate higher than 304 enables higher strength through cold reduction .

  • Machining: Good machinability with standard methods; requires positive slow feeds and resulfurized lubricants to manage tough chip formation .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using all common techniques; remains non-magnetic in heat-affected zone; no post-weld heat treatment required .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. 304 Stainless: 60% higher yield strength; comparable corrosion resistance; better wear resistance; lower nickel content reduces cost .

    • vs. 316 Stainless: Higher strength but lower molybdenum content; less resistant to pitting in chloride environments .

    • vs. 201 Stainless: Higher manganese and nitrogen provide better strength; similar corrosion resistance .

    • vs. Nitronic 60: Lower silicon and nickel; Nitronic 60 offers better galling resistance for metal-to-metal wear applications .
