Maraging 250 is a low-carbon, age-hardenable martensitic steel strengthened through intermetallic precipitation rather than carbon. The term"maraging"derives from"martensitic aging,"describing its unique strengthening mechanism. Produced via Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) and Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR), this material delivers an exceptional combination of ultra-high strength (up to 250 ksi yield), excellent fracture toughness, and superior weldability with minimal heat treatment distortion .

2.Fabrication & Material Comparison

Maraging 250 offers superior fabricability compared to conventional high-strength steels, with simple heat treatment and excellent dimensional stability.

  • Solution Annealing: 815°C (1500°F) × 1 hour, air cool; produces soft martensitic structure (30-35 HRC) for machining .

  • Aging: 482°C (900°F) × 3-6 hours, air cool; develops full strength (48-52 HRC) .

  • Hot Working: 955-1260°C (1750-2300°F); reheat as necessary; avoid working below 925°C .

  • Cold Working: Excellent formability in annealed condition; work-hardening rate low .

  • Machining: Good machinability in solution-annealed condition (30-35 HRC); carbide tooling recommended .

  • Welding: Readily welded using GTAW, GMAW, and electron beam processes; matching filler metal recommended; post-weld aging restores full strength .

Applications

  • Aerospace & Defense: Missile and rocket motor cases, landing gear components, aircraft structural parts, helicopter driveshafts

  • Ordnance: Advanced munitions, gun barrels, recoil mechanisms

  • Tooling: Extrusion dies, die-casting tooling, injection molds, cold heading tools

  • High-Performance Machinery: Gears, shafts, fasteners, couplings, high-pressure components

  • Sports Equipment: Racing components, high-performance springs
