A286 is a premium iron-nickel-chromium precipitation-hardening superalloy, widely recognized for its balanced high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance and cryogenic stability. Unlike conventional stainless steel, it retains stable mechanical performance at elevated temperatures up to 704°C (1300°F) and maintains non-magnetic austenitic structure down to cryogenic temperatures of -196°C (-320°F). Heat TreatmentSolution Treatment (AMS 5731): 982°C (1800°F) × 1 hour minimum, oil or water quench Precipitation Hardening (Aging): 704-760°C (1300-1400°F) × 16 hours, air cool
Note: The 1800°F solution treatment produces the highest creep-rupture strength in aged material . Alternative Condition (AMS 5737): 899°C (1650°F) solution treatment and aging provides improved room temperature strength and ductility.
