AMS 5659 specification covers a corrosion-resistant steel (15-5 PH / UNS S15500) in the form of bars, wire, forgings, flash welded rings, and extrusions in the solution heat treated condition, up to 12 inches (305 mm) in nominal diameter, and stock of any size for forging, flash welded rings, or extruding.
15-5 PH is a precipitation-hardenable martensitic stainless steel strengthened by copper-rich precipitates during aging. The alloy is available in solution heat treated (Condition A) and various aged conditions (H950, H1025, H1050, H1100, H1150). The solution treated condition provides a softer, workable state, while aging develops high strength. Solution Heat Treatment & Precipitation Hardening CharacteristicsAMS5659 specifies delivery in the solution heat treated condition (Condition A). In this state, the material is soft, ductile, and readily machinable or cold formed. After final component fabrication, a single low-temperature precipitation hardening (aging) cycle develops the desired mechanical properties.
