AMS 5643W specification covers a corrosion-resistant steel (17-4PH / UNS S17400) in the form of bars, wire, forgings, mechanical tubing, and flash welded rings in the solution heat treated condition up to 8.0 inches (203 mm) in diameter, and stock of any size for forging, flash welded rings, or heading. 17-4PH is a precipitation-hardenable martensitic stainless steel strengthened by copper-rich precipitates during aging. The alloy is available in solution heat treated (Condition A) and various aged conditions (H900, H925, H1025, H1075, H1100, H1150). The solution treated condition provides a softer, workable state, while aging develops high strength. Fabrication Solution Annealing (Condition A): 1038°C (1900°F) × 0.5-1 hour, air cool or oil quench Aging: 482-621°C (900-1150°F) × 1-4 hours, air cool Machining: Good machinability in Condition A; more difficult after aging Welding: Good weldability using TIG, MIG, and resistance welding; post-weld aging may be required to restore properties Forming: Good formability in Condition A
