253MA Stainless Steel, also designated as EN 1.4835, X9CrNiSiNCe21-11-2, UNS S30815, and SS 2368, is a premium austenitic heat and creep-resistant chromium-nickel stainless steel. Core Advantages & Operating ConditionsHigh-Temperature Oxidation Resistance: 253MA's high silicon and cerium content promotes the formation of a highly adherent oxide layer that resists spalling during thermal cycling . The alloy can be used up to 1150°C (2100°F) in air, with excellent resistance to isothermal and cyclic oxidation. Creep Strength: 253MA offers superior creep strength compared to standard 18/8 steels and 309S grades, making it suitable for load-bearing applications at elevated temperatures where creep is the design-limiting factor. At 600°C, the 1% creep strength at 100,000 hours is 70 MPa; at 800°C, it is 11 MPa. Carburization Resistance: The protective oxide scale provides good resistance to carburization in carbon-rich atmospheres . In alternately oxidizing and carburizing environments, the grade performs well, though caution is advised in low-oxygen atmospheres containing ammonia. Cyclic Oxidation Performance: Thanks to the rare earth metal (cerium) addition, 253MA demonstrates superior resistance to cyclic oxidation compared to TP310 and 309S steels under severe thermal cycling conditions.
