Fabrication and Heat Treatment GuidanceMachinabilityInconel 706 can be machined with conventional machine tools used for iron-based alloys. General machining work uses standard commercial coolants. Water-based coolants are required for high-speed machining operations, including turning, milling and grinding, to protect cutting tools and ensure smooth surface finish. FormingInconel 706 can be formed by all conventional metal forming techniques, both hot and cold. WeldingMultiple mature welding processes are suitable for Inconel 706, including gas-tungsten arc welding, shielded metal-arc welding, submerged-arc welding, and gas metal-arc welding. Heat TreatmentThe standard annealing process for Inconel 706 is performed at 927 to 1010°C (1700 to 1850°F), followed by controlled cooling. The alloy achieves higher strength via precipitation hardening heat treatment. ForgingRecommended forging temperature range for Inconel 706 is 983 to 1149°C (1800 to 2100°F). Hot WorkingHot working operations can be carried out between 872 to 1149°C (1600 to 2100°F). Cold WorkingCold working of Inconel 706 can be completed with standard tooling. ApplicationsAlloy 706 is the reliable material of choice for core gas turbine components. Common parts include turbine shafts, engine casings, turbine discs and high-strength fasteners for both aerospace and land-based gas turbine equipment.
