2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria

  • Fracture Toughness: K₁c 115-130 MPa√m at 250 ksi yield—significantly higher than conventional ultra-high-strength steels

  • SCC Resistance: Excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance; superior to 300M

  • Fatigue Strength: Outstanding properties for landing gear and rotating components

  • Service Temperature: Maintains properties up to 315°C (600°F)

  • Initial Condition: Supplied normalized and overaged (max 372 HB) for machinability

3. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Heat Treatment Sequence:

    • Normalize: 899°C (1650°F) × 60 min, air cool

    • Overage: 677°C (1250°F) × 16 hours, air cool

    • Solution: 885°C (1625°F) × 1 hour, quench

    • Cold Stabilization: -73°C (-100°F) × 1 hour

    • Age: 482°C (900°F) × 5 hours, air cool

  • Machining: Excellent in normalized/overaged condition

  • Welding: Good weldability; post-weld heat treatment required
