Alloy 400, widely known as Monel 400 (UNS N04400), is a single-phase solid-solution nickel-copper alloy composed of 63–70% nickel and 28–34% copper, with trace iron, manganese, carbon and silicon.
It features outstanding comprehensive performance including superior corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength, excellent ductility and stable thermal conductivity. Different from ordinary stainless steel, Monel 400 maintains stable structural performance in extreme corrosive and variable temperature environments, making it one of the most cost-effective nickel-based alloys for chemical, marine and energy industries.

Core Performance & Corrosion Resistance
The biggest advantage of Alloy 400 is its versatile corrosion resistance for both reducing and partial oxidizing media. It resists sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, organic acid and alkaline solution corrosion, and performs excellently in seawater and industrial circulating water environments.
In flowing seawater, Monel 400 maintains an ultra-low corrosion rate; in static water environments, it effectively relieves pitting and crevice corrosion risks. Meanwhile, the alloy features excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance and stable thermal conductivity, perfectly adapting to long-term heat transfer and fluid conveying working conditions. Professional Processing & Fabrication Guide
Alloy 400 has good machinability and formability, supporting hot working, cold working, welding and precision CNC machining. Standardized processing procedures are critical to avoid deformation and performance loss.
1. Hot Forming
The optimal hot working temperature range is 1200°F–2150°F. Heavy deformation processing is recommended at 1700°F–2150°F for uniform forming, while light reduction can be conducted above 1200°F. Low-temperature hot working refines grain size and improves mechanical properties. Prolonged high-temperature soaking is forbidden, and the heating temperature shall never exceed 2150°F to prevent permanent material damage. ZYTC Alloy adopts precise temperature control for hot forging and rolling to ensure uniform grain structure of finished products.
2. Heat Treatment Specifications
Stress Relieving: Heat at 1000°F–1200°F for 1 hour followed by slow cooling, which eliminates processing stress and effectively prevents stress corrosion cracking, with slight reduction in tensile strength and hardness and improved ductility.
Stress Equalizing: Keep at 575°F for 3 hours to improve yield strength without affecting other mechanical properties, reducing machining deformation.
Annealing: Open annealing at 1600°F–1800°F for 2–10 minutes; box annealing at 1400°F–1500°F for 1–3 hours to completely soften work-hardened materials and restore ductility.
3. Pickling & Finishing
Monel 400 forms dense oxide film when cooled in air after heating. Professional pickling treatment can remove surface oxide layers to obtain bright and clean metal surface.
