Titanium Grade 7 is a palladium-stabilized commercially pure titanium that offers mechanical and physical properties identical to Grade 2, but with significantly enhanced corrosion resistance. The strategic addition of 0.12-0.25% palladium provides exceptional resistance to reducing acids and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. This grade is the material of choice for chemical processing equipment, desalination plants, and electrochemical applications where maximum corrosion resistance is required .

 2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

Titanium Grade 7 offers identical fabricability to Grade 2, with the same processing parameters.

  • Annealing: 650-760°C (1200-1400°F) × 6 min - 2 hours, air cool; full softening after cold work .

  • Stress Relieving: 480-595°C (896-1103°F) × 15 min - 4 hours, air cool; relieves cold work stresses .

  • Hot Working: 843-899°C (1550-1650°F); avoid overheating above beta transus (913°C) .

  • Cold Working: Similar to Grade 2; work-hardening rate moderate. Post-work annealing recommended to restore ductility .

  • Machining: Same as Grade 2; requires sharp tools, positive rake angles, and generous coolant flow .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability; single-phase alpha structure unaffected by welding. Must be shielded with inert gas to prevent contamination. GTAW (TIG) with matching filler metal recommended .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. Titanium Grade 2: Identical mechanical properties but significantly superior corrosion resistance in reducing acids and crevice environments; higher cost justified by extended service life .

    • vs. Titanium Grade 12: Grade 7 offers better reducing acid resistance; Grade 12 selected for higher strength applications .

    • vs. 316L Stainless: Half the density, superior corrosion resistance in chlorides; immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking .

3. Applications

  • Electrochemical: Anode and cathode components, cell hardware, electrolytic cells

  • Chemical Processing: Reactor vessels, heat exchangers, piping systems, pumps, valves for hydrochloric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acid service

  • Air Pollution Control: Wet scrubbers, ducting, stack liners

  • Pulp & Paper: Bleaching equipment, washer drums, piping for chlorine dioxide service

  • Hydrometallurgy: Extraction vessels, electrowinning cells, leaching tanks

  • Desalination: Brine heaters, evaporators, heat exchanger tubing

  • Marine: Seawater piping, heat exchangers, offshore platform components

  • Waste Treatment: Hazardous waste processing equipment
