Grade 9 Titanium, often called"half 6-4,"is an alpha-beta titanium alloy containing 3% aluminum and 2.5% vanadium. It offers 20–50% higher strength than commercially pure titanium grades while maintaining significantly better formability and weldability than Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5). This alloy provides an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and fabricability, making it the preferred material for aircraft hydraulic tubing, high-performance sporting goods, and corrosion-resistant industrial equipment .
1. Product Specifications & Physical Data
ZYTC Alloy supplies UNS R56320 in comprehensive mill forms for aerospace, industrial, and consumer applications requiring verified mechanical properties and complete material traceability.
Available Forms: Bar, tube (seamless), strip, coil, sheet, and plate .
Ti3Al-2.5V offers excellent fabricability with proper techniques, particularly for tube forming and welding.
Heat Treatment Options :
Annealing: 593-760°C (1100-1400°F) × 1-3 hours, air cool
Stress Relief: 316-649°C (600-1200°F) × 1-3 hours, air cool
Solution Treat: 871-927°C (1600-1700°F) × 15-20 min, water quench
Aging: 482-510°C (900-950°F) × 2-8 hours, air cool
Hot Working/Forging: Rough forge 871-900°C (1600-1650°F), finish 843-871°C (1550-1600°F) .
Cold Working: Similar to austenitic stainless steel; can be formed using hydropress, power brake, stretch, or drop hammer techniques . Post-work annealing recommended to restore properties.
Machining: Requires slow speeds, high feed rates, and ample coolant flow; tungsten carbide tools (C1-C4) recommended .
Welding: Readily welded by standard gas tungsten arc process with inert gas shielding; machine settings similar to stainless steel .
Material Comparison:
vs. Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5): Lower strength but significantly better cold formability and weldability; preferred for tubing and complex formed parts .
vs. CP Titanium (Grades 1-4): 20-50% higher strength while maintaining good fabricability .
3. Applications
Aerospace: Hydraulic and fuel system tubing (AMS 4943/4944/4945); aircraft engine hydraulic lines; structural components .
Industrial: Corrosion-resistant pipe and vessels for oil & gas, seawater handling, chemical processing .
Heat Transfer: Tubing for heat exchangers, condensers, and coolers in aggressive environments .
