Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn (UNS R58153) is a metastable beta titanium alloy specifically designed for strip producibility and excellent cold formability while achieving high strength through simple solution treatment and aging. It offers exceptional room-temperature bending characteristics and can be strengthened to tensile levels exceeding 1240 MPa (180 ksi) via age hardening. This alloy is extensively used in aerospace airframe components, fasteners, and sheet metal fabrications where formability and high strength are required .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonTi-15-3-3-3 was developed specifically for strip producibility and cold formability, making it ideal for sheet metal fabrications. Solution Treatment: 792°C (1450°F) × 5-15 minutes, air cool; produces soft, formable condition . Aging: 482-566°C (900-1050°F) × 4-16 hours, air cool; 538°C (1000°F)/8h typical for maximum strength . Stress Relief: 538-649°C (1000-1200°F) × 1 hour, air cool . Forging: Rough forge 982-1093°C (1800-2000°F), finish 816-927°C (1500-1700°F) . Cold Working: Excellent cold formability similar to moderately tempered austenitic stainless steel; suitable for bending, rolling, stamping. Post-work aging develops final strength . Machining: Difficult to machine; requires slow speeds, high coolant flow, and high feed rates. Tungsten carbide (C1-C4) or cobalt high-speed tools recommended . Welding: Good weldability; weld properties can be restored by post-weld aging . Material Comparison: vs. Ti-6Al-4V: Superior cold formability; can be strip-produced; simpler heat treatment; slightly higher density . vs. Ti-3Al-2.5V (Grade 9): Higher achievable strength through aging; more complex alloy system; similar formability . vs. 17-7PH Stainless: Lower density; comparable formability and heat treatment response; superior corrosion resistance .
3. ApplicationsAirframe Components: Sheet metal parts, structural fabrications, stiffeners, clips, brackets Aerospace Fasteners: High-strength bolts, screws, rivets Tubing & Tankage: Hydraulic tubing, fuel lines, pressure vessels Flat-Rolled Products: Strip, foil, sheet for formed components Forgings & Castings: Complex-shaped structural parts Honeycomb Structures: Foil for high-strength sandwich panels
