Grade 4 Titanium is the strongest of the unalloyed commercially pure titanium grades, offering maximum strength while retaining excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and weldability. With higher oxygen content providing solid-solution strengthening, it achieves yield strengths up to 560 MPa—approaching that of some titanium alloys—while maintaining the corrosion resistance inherent to CP grades. This grade is specified for hydraulic and instrumentation tubing, chemical process equipment, and marine components requiring maximum strength in a pure titanium product .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

Grade 4 titanium requires more robust fabrication equipment than lower-strength grades but remains workable with proper techniques.

  • Annealing: 650-760°C (1200-1400°F) × 10-30 minutes, air cool; full softening after cold work .

  • Stress Relieving: 482-538°C (900-1000°F) × 45 minutes, air cool; relieves cold work stresses .

  • Hot Working: Rough forging at 935°C (1715°F), finish at 843°C (1550°F); avoid overheating above beta transus (950°C) .

  • Cold Working: Similar to tempered austenitic stainless steel; work-hardening rate higher than lower CP grades. Post-work annealing critical to restore ductility and corrosion resistance .

  • Machining: Higher cutting forces than lower CP grades; requires sharp tools, positive rake angles, rigid setups, and generous coolant flow .

  • Welding: Must be shielded with inert gas (argon or helium) to prevent oxygen/nitrogen contamination. GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) with matching filler metal (ERTi-4) recommended .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. Grade 3 Titanium: Higher strength (560 MPa vs. 485 MPa yield); selected where Grade 3 strength insufficient .

    • vs. Grade 2 Titanium: 60% higher yield strength with moderate reduction in formability; preferred for high-pressure tubing .

    • vs. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V): Lower strength than alloyed titanium (560 MPa vs. 830 MPa yield) but superior corrosion resistance in reducing environments; specified when alloying elements cannot be tolerated .

    • vs. 316L Stainless: Half the density, superior chloride corrosion resistance; comparable strength at significantly lower weight .
