Grade 3 Titanium is an unalloyed commercially pure titanium offering higher strength than Grades 1 and 2, while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance and good weldability. With density 4.51 g/cm³ (60% of steel), it provides enhanced mechanical properties for applications requiring moderate strength combined with the corrosion resistance inherent to commercially pure titanium. This grade is specified for chemical processing equipment, marine components, and airframe parts operating up to 204°C (400°F) .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

Grade 3 titanium requires more powerful equipment for forming than lower-strength grades, but remains readily fabricable with proper techniques.

  • Annealing: 650-760°C (1200-1400°F) × 10-30 minutes, air cool; full softening after cold work .

  • Stress Relieving: 482-538°C (900-1000°F) × 45 minutes, air cool; relieves cold work stresses .

  • Hot Working: 843-907°C (1550-1665°F); avoid overheating above beta transus (920°C) to prevent grain growth .

  • Cold Working: Comparable to tempered austenitic stainless steel; work-hardening rate moderate. Post-work annealing recommended to restore ductility and corrosion resistance .

  • Machining: Similar to Grade 2 but with higher cutting forces; requires sharp tools, positive rake angles, and generous coolant flow .

  • Welding: Must be shielded with inert gas (argon or helium) to prevent oxygen/nitrogen contamination. GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) with matching filler metal (ERTi-3) recommended .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. Grade 2 Titanium: Higher strength (380-485 MPa vs. 345 MPa yield); selected where Grade 2 strength insufficient .

    • vs. Grade 4 Titanium: Lower strength than Grade 4 (380-485 MPa vs. 480-550 MPa); intermediate option between Grade 2 and Grade 4 .

    • vs. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V): Significantly lower strength than alloyed titanium; selected where corrosion resistance, not maximum strength, is primary requirement .

    • vs. 304L Stainless: Half the density, superior chloride corrosion resistance; comparable strength at lower weight .
