AMS 5876 is an SAE International aerospace material specification covering cobalt‑alloy strip up to 0.100 inch (2.50 mm) in thickness and up to 4.000 inches (100.00 mm) in width. The corresponding grade is UNS R30003 (W.Nr 2.4711), commercially known as Elgiloy® (European equivalent Phynox, Chinese equivalent 3J21).

This non‑magnetic Cobalt‑Chromium‑Nickel‑Molybdenum alloy is produced via VIM + VAR double vacuum melting, offering a unique combination of ultra‑high strength, excellent formability, outstanding corrosion resistance, and high fatigue strength. Aging of cold‑reduced material can provide additional strength increases of up to 25%.

 Heat Treatment

Annealing (Per AMS 5876)

  • Temperature: 1120°C (2048°F)

Aging (Precipitation Hardening)

  • Temperature: 527°C (980°F)

  • Time: 5 hours

  • Cooling: Air cool

Important: Forming should be performed before heat treatment, as heat treatment strengthens the material and makes subsequent forming more difficult.


Corrosion Resistance

  • Sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC): Highly resistant – the alloy of choice for the most demanding sour well environments.

  • Seawater exposure: Virtually immune to crevice corrosion, stress corrosion, and pitting – even at the highest strength levels.

  • NACE compliance: For H₂S‑containing environments, material must be supplied in the aged (cold‑worked + precipitation‑hardened) condition with hardness not exceeding 48 HRC.

Critical procurement note: The annealed condition called for by AMS 5876 and the hardened condition required by NACE MR0175 are often in conflict. For dual‑certified material, specify a low‑temperature/short‑time aging process (e.g., 425–455°C) to achieve a hardness range of HRC 46.5–48.0 while maintaining yield strength ≥1500 MPa.
