2.4420 (NiFe 44) is a wrought nickel-iron soft magnetic alloy containing approximately 44% iron and a minimum of 53% nickel. It delivers high initial and maximum magnetic permeability combined with high saturation magnetization, making it ideal for applications requiring high sensitivity to weak magnetic fields, such as transducers and totalizing current transformers for residual current devices (RCDs).

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria

  • Nickel Content: 53-56% Ni balances permeability and saturation induction — higher saturation (1.3-1.5 T) than 80% Ni permalloys allows more compact core designs

  • Permeability: High initial and maximum permeability for efficient magnetic coupling

  • Thermal Stability: Stable up to ~200°C; Curie temperature ~450°C

  • Fabrication: Anneal in hydrogen at 1100-1200°C for optimum properties
