Hiperco® 50 (UNS R30005) is an iron-cobalt-vanadium soft magnetic alloy renowned for its exceptionally high magnetic saturation (24 kilogauss), high DC maximum permeability, low coercive force, and low AC core loss. The alloy contains a small niobium addition for grain refinement during mill processing and final heat treatment. Produced primarily in strip form, it is used for rotor and stator laminations in motors and generators for aircraft power generation applications.

1. Product Specifications & Physical Data

Hiperco® 50 (UNS R30005) is available in cold rolled strip form and is typically supplied in thicknesses ranging from 0.004″ to 0.020″ (0.10mm to 0.51mm). The alloy is also available in Hiperco® 50A (high purity) and Hiperco 50 HS (higher strength) variants.

  • Available Forms: Strip, coil, laminations

  • Specifications: ASTM A801 Alloy Type 1, MIL-A-47182

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Forming & Machining: Hiperco® 50 is very difficult to form due to high cobalt content and exhibits a high work-hardening rate. It is not produced in machinable forms; components are manufactured by stamping laminations from cold rolled strip.

  • Heat Treatment: Final annealing is performed in a protective atmosphere (pure hydrogen) or vacuum environment at 760-843°C (1400-1550°F). The heat treatment provides an optimum combination of mechanical and magnetic properties to withstand high service stresses.

  • Stack Production: Stator and rotor stacks are assembled from stamped laminations and undergo final annealing after stacking to achieve optimal magnetic properties.

  • Grain Refinement: Niobium addition (0.05% for standard Hiperco 50, 0.30% for Hiperco 50 HS) provides grain refinement during mill processing and final heat treatment.

3. Applications

  • Aerospace Power Generation: Rotor and stator laminations for aircraft generators (commercial and military aircraft)

  • Active Magnetic Bearings: High-speed rotor systems requiring low iron losses and high mechanical load capacity

  • High-Frequency Transformers: Laminated cores for high-efficiency power conversion

  • Transducers & Sensors: Precision magnetic components requiring high saturation

  • Particle Accelerators: Electromagnet poles requiring maximum field strength

  • MRI Systems: Specialized magnetic components in medical imaging equipment
