Material Characteristics and Technical Specifications

AISI 4330 is a low‑alloy steel capable of being heat treated to high strength levels. Vanadium is added to the chemical composition to significantly improve impact toughness and hardenability. This grade is normally produced as a consumable electrode remelted product, typically using Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) , to ensure the highest cleanliness and microstructural uniformity. Alternatively, Electro‑Slag Remelting (ESR) may be employed as the secondary melting process when specified by the end‑user. AMS 6411 also mandates double tempering to completely transform retained austenite and stabilise the microstructure, thereby ensuring consistent properties.

Compared with other high‑strength steels, AISI 4330 heat treated to 200,000 psi (approx. 1380 MPa) ultimate tensile strength develops minimum fracture toughness (K₁₂) values of 80–100 ksi√in, whereas 4340 steel at the same strength level typically exhibits only 60–70 ksi√in. This highlights the superior strength‑toughness balance of 4330.
