AMS 5688 defines requirements for corrosion‑resistant 302 stainless steel wire intended for spring applications. This grade is designed for springs requiring corrosion resistance and heat resistance up to 500 °F (260 °C), though its usage extends far beyond spring‑making. For spring‑grade applications, material is supplied in cold‑drawn condition. Proper post‑forming treatment enables 302 springs to exhibit lower permanent set compared with many competing spring alloys when operating up to 500 °F (260 °C).

A key material characteristic: annealed 302 is essentially non‑magnetic. In cold‑drawn spring temper, partial martensite transformation occurs during drawing, creating slight magnetism. The higher the cold‑reduction ratio, the stronger the magnetic response of the wire.

Key Material Properties

  • Excellent corrosion resistance: Classic 18‑8 austenitic structure delivers reliable resistance to atmospheric, mild chemical and ambient corrosion environments.
  • Spring‑temper cold‑drawn performance: High tensile strength for spring forming; good strength retention at moderate temperatures up to 260 °C (500 °F).
  • Low permanent set after proper post‑forming treatment: Outperforms many alternative spring alloys under elevated‑temperature service conditions.
  • Magnetic behaviour note: Slight magnetism in cold‑drawn spring temper, caused by martensite formation during drawing; magnetism increases with higher cold‑reduction percentage; annealed state remains non‑magnetic.
  • Good formability: Suitable for coiling, bending and spring‑forming operations for industrial and aerospace components.

Compliance & Standards

ZYTC Alloy’s AMS 5688 302 spring wire fully meets dual‑standard requirements:
  • AMS 5688: Aerospace specification for corrosion‑resistant spring wire
  • ASTM A313: Standard specification for stainless‑steel spring wire
  • UNS designation: S30200

Available Size Range

Our AMS 5688 302 spring wire covers the full dimensional scope defined by the specification:
  • Diameter range: 0.014 in (0.356 mm) to 0.625 in (15.875 mm)
  • Supply condition: Cold‑drawn spring temper (standard for spring manufacture); annealed temper available on request
  • Surface finish: Smooth, uniform surface with tight diameter tolerance, ready for coiling and spring fabrication
  • Custom options: Precision spooling, special coil lengths, custom tensile‑strength grades, and non‑destructive testing upon requirement

Applications

AMS 5688 302 spring wire is widely used for components requiring corrosion resistance combined with spring performance:
  • Compression, tension and torsion springs for industrial equipment
  • Aerospace and instrument springs for moderate‑temperature operating environments
  • Corrosion‑resistant fasteners, wire‑formed components and precision stamped parts
  • General‑purpose springs for marine, chemical and outdoor‑exposed assemblies

AMS 5688 UNS S30200 302 stainless steel spring wire is a versatile, high‑performance spring material, renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance, high tensile strength (1300–2200 N/mm² in the spring temper condition), and good heat resistance (maximum service temperature 260°C / 500°F). The material achieves its high strength through cold drawing, and after stress relief treatment following forming, it maintains excellent spring performance over a wide temperature range.
