The AMS 5512 specification covers 347 stainless steel sheet, strip, and plate (thickness ≥ 0.002 in / 0.051 mm), a chromium‑nickel austenitic stainless steel specifically designed to address this challenge.

Material Characteristics and Technical Advantages

347 stainless steel is a modified grade based on Type 302, with the addition of columbium (niobium) and tantalum for stabilisation. The key advantage of this modification is its excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion when exposed to the temperature range of 800°F to 1500°F (approx. 427°C to 816°C) – precisely the range where conventional austenitic stainless steels (such as 304 and 302) are most susceptible to sensitisation and intergranular attack.

In general corrosive environments, Type 347 offers corrosion resistance comparable to Type 302. However, its stabilised chemistry allows it to maintain corrosion resistance after welding without the need for post‑weld annealing, making it particularly suitable for heavy welded assemblies or applications where post‑weld heat treatment is not feasible.
