316 stainless steel is the second most widely used austenitic grade after 304, distinguished by the addition of molybdenum (2-2.5%). This key alloying element provides dramatically improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments, making it the preferred choice for marine, chemical, and industrial applications. With excellent formability, weldability, and mechanical properties, 316 offers superior performance where 304 is insufficient .

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria
316 stainless steel is specified when designers require enhanced corrosion resistance beyond 304, particularly in chloride-containing environments.
Molybdenum Effect: 2-2.5% molybdenum provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride solutions, seawater, and industrial chemicals .
Service Temperature Range: Continuous service up to 870°C (1600°F); intermittent service to 925°C (1700°F) .
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive media including organic acids, sulfuric acid (dilute), and phosphoric acid. Superior to 304 in marine and industrial atmospheres .
Formability: Excellent formability identical to 304; suitable for deep drawing, bending, and complex forming operations .
Weldability: Excellent weldability using all standard fusion methods; post-weld annealing recommended for maximum corrosion resistance in heavy sections .
Limitations: Not resistant to hot concentrated sulfuric acid; limited resistance to reducing acids .
3. Fabrication & Material Comparison
Heat Treatment: Solution anneal 1010-1120°C (1850-2050°F), rapid cool (water quench or accelerated air cool); cannot be hardened by heat treatment .
Forming: Excellent formability in annealed condition; work-hardening rate moderate; similar to 304 but with slightly higher work-hardening rate .
Machining: Good machinability similar to 304; requires sharp tools, positive feeds, and adequate coolant; chip breakers recommended .
Welding: Excellent weldability using TIG, MIG, SMAW, and resistance welding; 316L filler recommended for maximum corrosion resistance .
Material Comparison:
vs. 304 Stainless: Molybdenum addition (2-2.5%) provides superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride environments; slightly higher cost .
vs. 316L (1.4404): Standard carbon (0.07% max) vs. low carbon (0.03% max); 316L preferred for heavy welded sections to prevent sensitization .
vs. 317 Stainless: Lower molybdenum (2-2.5% vs. 3-4%) than 317; 316 offers good corrosion resistance at lower cost .
vs. 316Ti (1.4571): Titanium-stabilized version for improved intergranular corrosion resistance after welding .
Industrial: Mining screens, water filtration equipment, threaded fasteners, springs
Architectural: Coastal building components, handrails, exterior trim
