2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria
310 stainless steel is specified when designers require an alloy capable of performing reliably across extreme temperature ranges, from cryogenic to 1093°C.
Service Temperature Range: Continuous service up to 1093°C (2000°F); excellent oxidation resistance through this range. Also suitable for cryogenic service down to -268°C (-450°F) with retained toughness .
High-Temperature Performance: High chromium content provides superior scaling resistance; retains significant room-temperature strength at elevated temperatures .
Cryogenic Properties: Maintains excellent toughness and low magnetic permeability at cryogenic temperatures .
Corrosion Resistance: Good resistance to a wide range of corrosive media; outperforms 304 in many high-temperature environments .
Low Magnetic Permeability: Suitable for applications requiring non-magnetic properties at cryogenic temperatures .
Weldability: Good weldability using standard fusion and resistance methods; 310S (low carbon) recommended for heavy welded sections .
3. Fabrication & Material Comparison
Heat Treatment: Solution anneal at 1038-1150°C (1900-2100°F), rapid cool (water quench or accelerated air cool); cannot be hardened by heat treatment .
Hot Working: Forge at 927-1177°C (1700-2150°F); avoid working below 927°C to prevent cracking .
Cold Working: Work-hardening rate moderate; intermediate annealing may be required for severe forming operations .
Machining: Similar to 304 but with higher cutting forces due to nickel content; requires sharp tools, positive feeds, and adequate coolant .
Welding: Good weldability using TIG, MIG, and resistance methods; 310 filler recommended; 310S (low carbon) preferred for heavy sections to prevent sensitization .
