304L is the low-carbon version of the classic 18/8 stainless steel, specifically formulated to prevent carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion in welded fabrications. With maximum carbon content of 0.03%, it offers identical corrosion resistance to standard 304 while eliminating sensitization risks during welding. Often supplied as"dual certified"(meeting both 304 and 304L specifications), this alloy is the preferred choice for heavy-gauge welded components, chemical processing equipment, and applications requiring maximum corrosion protection after welding .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison
Heat Treatment: Solution anneal 1010-1120°C (1850-2050°F), rapid cool (water quench or accelerated air cool) .
Forming: Excellent formability in annealed condition; work-hardening rate moderate .
Machining: Good machinability; requires sharp cutting edges, positive feeds, and adequate coolant to prevent work hardening; chip breakers recommended .
Welding: Excellent weldability using all common methods; 308L filler recommended; no post-weld heat treatment required to restore corrosion resistance .
Material Comparison:
vs. 304 Stainless: Lower carbon prevents sensitization; identical mechanical and corrosion properties; preferred for welded fabrications .
vs. 316L: Lower molybdenum content; less resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments .
vs. 321 Stainless: 304L achieves intergranular corrosion resistance through low carbon rather than titanium stabilization; more cost-effective .
vs. 304H: Lower carbon vs. higher carbon (0.04-0.10%) for high-temperature strength; 304L selected for welding applications .
3. Applications
Food & Beverage: Brewery, dairy, pharmaceutical production equipment, saucepans, cutlery
