Grade 304 is the most versatile and commonly used stainless steel globally, with the classic"18/8"designation (18% chromium, 8% nickel). It offers an exceptional balance of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, and cost-effectiveness. This alloy is suitable for a vast range of applications from food processing equipment and kitchen sinks to industrial components and architectural trim. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment but achieves its properties through cold working .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison
Heat Treatment: Solution anneal 1010-1120°C (1850-2050°F), rapid cool (water quench or accelerated air cool) .
Forming: Excellent formability in annealed condition; work-hardening rate moderate; suitable for deep drawing and complex forming .
Welding: Excellent weldability using TIG, MIG, SMAW, and resistance welding; 308L filler recommended for low-carbon applications .
Material Comparison:
vs. 304L (1.4307): Lower carbon (0.03% max) provides better resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion after welding; identical mechanical properties .
vs. 316 Stainless: Lower molybdenum content provides less resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion; more cost-effective for non-chloride environments .
vs. 301 Stainless: Higher nickel provides better corrosion resistance and formability; 301 offers higher strength through cold working .
vs. 201 Stainless: Superior corrosion resistance due to higher nickel content; 201 is a lower-cost alternative with manganese substitution .
